Shropshire Supports Refugees is a Community Interest Company, which co-ordinates a range of activities that help refugees settle in to their new area, improve well-being, and fulfil goals for themselves and their children
What we do is led by the needs of those we support. In practice, this involves combining local knowledge with practical help and fundraising to enable access to formal and informal support, including translation, English lessons and practise; services for physical and mental health; opportunities for volunteering, learning and employment; befriending and social support; help to access legal and housing advice; providing everyday items such as clothes, shoes, toys, books, bikes and household equipment
We provide the information, co-ordination, and funds where we can, but much of our work is made possible by our fantastic community who warmly welcome refugees settling in Shropshire, and back this up with generous donations of cash, equipment, skills, time and effort
The stories of refugees are complex: Political campaigns and some media coverage have simplified these stories in damaging ways. We need now more than ever to find positive ways of welcoming refugees, and to celebrate their talents and achievements.
